About the Archive Converter
The Archive Converter changes a compressed archive from one format to another β for example turning a ZIP into a TAR.GZ, or a 7z into a ZIP β without you having to manually extract and re-pack the files. It reads the contents of the source archive, then writes them back out in your chosen target format, preserving the folder structure inside.
Different platforms and tools expect different archive formats. A colleague on Linux may prefer tar.gz, a web upload form may only accept ZIP, and some software ships in 7z. Rather than installing command-line utilities to bridge the gap, you can convert between formats in a couple of clicks and hand off exactly the format the other side needs.
The conversion happens entirely in your browser, so the archive and everything inside it stay on your device β nothing is uploaded. That keeps source code, documents, and backups private, and means even large archives are processed without waiting in an upload queue or trusting a third-party server.
How to use the Archive Converter
- Upload the archive you want to convert by dragging it in or browsing for it.
- Wait while the tool reads and lists the files contained in the archive.
- Choose the target format you want to convert to (for example ZIP, TAR, or GZIP).
- Set any available compression options, such as compression level.
- Start the conversion and let the tool repack the contents locally.
- Download the newly converted archive when it is ready.
Common use cases
- Converting a 7z download into a ZIP so it opens natively on a machine without extra software.
- Repacking files as tar.gz for a colleague or server that expects that format.
- Standardizing a mix of archive formats into one consistent format before sharing.
- Preparing an upload in the exact archive format a website or service requires.
Frequently asked questions
Which archive formats are supported?
Common formats such as ZIP, TAR, and GZIP are supported for conversion, with additional formats depending on your browserβs capabilities. You select the source by uploading it and pick the target from the available options.
Will converting change the files inside the archive?
No. The files themselves are unchanged β only the container format around them changes. The folder structure inside the archive is preserved during conversion.
Does converting between formats lose quality?
Archives are lossless containers, so your files come out byte-for-byte identical regardless of format. Only the compression efficiency (final size) differs between formats.
Is my archive uploaded to a server?
No. The archive is read, repacked, and offered for download entirely within your browser, so its contents never leave your device.
Can I convert password-protected archives?
Encrypted archives generally need to be unlocked first. If your archive is not protected, conversion proceeds directly; otherwise extract it with the correct password before converting.
Is there a size limit?
Because processing happens in your browser, the practical limit depends on your deviceβs available memory. Typical archives convert comfortably; extremely large ones may be slower on low-memory devices.
