About the Archive Inspector
The Archive Inspector lets you look inside a ZIP or other archive and see exactly what it contains — file names, sizes, and folder structure — without extracting anything to your disk. It is the quick way to answer "what’s actually in this file?" before you commit to unpacking it.
This is especially handy when you receive an archive from someone else and want to confirm its contents before extracting, or when you need to find a single file inside a large archive without dumping everything onto your machine. Inspecting first saves disk space and avoids cluttering folders with files you did not want.
All inspection happens in your browser, so the archive never leaves your computer. You can safely examine downloads, email attachments, and shared archives privately, with no upload and no account required.
How to use the Archive Inspector
- Upload the archive you want to inspect by dragging it in or clicking to browse.
- Wait a moment while the tool reads the archive’s index.
- Browse the listed contents, including file names, sizes, and the internal folder structure.
- Use the listing to confirm what the archive holds before deciding whether to extract it.
- If you do want the files, open the archive with the ZIP Extractor to pull them out.
Common use cases
- Checking the contents of a downloaded archive before extracting it.
- Verifying that a backup archive contains the files and folders you expect.
- Locating a specific file inside a large archive without unpacking everything.
- Auditing an archive’s structure and sizes to spot unexpectedly large files.
Frequently asked questions
Does inspecting an archive extract its files?
No. The tool only reads the archive’s internal index to list what is inside; it does not write any files to your disk. To get the actual files, use a dedicated extractor.
What information does it show?
You can see the file names, their sizes, and the folder hierarchy within the archive. This gives you a complete picture of the contents before extraction.
Can it inspect formats other than ZIP?
ZIP is the most broadly supported format; other common archive types may also be readable depending on your browser. Upload the file to see its contents listed.
Is the archive uploaded anywhere?
No. The archive is read locally in your browser, so its contents stay completely private and nothing is sent to a server.
Why inspect instead of just extracting?
Inspecting is faster, uses no disk space, and lets you verify contents from untrusted sources before committing to an extraction. It is a safer first step for unfamiliar archives.
